The Color Rule: 60-30-10

A lot of people shy away from using color fearing that they will use too little or too less. But not to worry, if you follow the 60-30-10 color rule, and choose PPG Paints as your paint solution, incorporating color in your space will be as easy as 1-2-3.

60-30-10

So what does this mean? For starters, always remember that for any room, you should have a three-color palette; dominant, secondary, and accent. Once you choose your color palette, the 60-30-10 rule falls into place.

60: Decorate 60% of the room with the dominant color

30: Decorate 30% of the room with the secondary color

10: Decorate 10% of the space with the accent color

Dominant, Secondary, and Accent Colors

Your dominant color is the color to paint your walls. Although you're free to pick whichever color you’d like, we recommend using PPG Paints neutral shades like thin ice, heavy cream, Belgian waffle, or any other color from their neutral palette.

Use the secondary color in your room to add contrast. Generally speaking, this color is used for area rugs, curtains, furniture, or even an accent wall.

The accent color is used to add a little flare to your room. Make sure that your accent contrasts and complements both your dominant and secondary colors. Accent pieces can range from throw pillows to lamps, to candles and collectibles.

We know what you're thinking. “I had a hard enough time picking the dominant color, how will I ever be able to pick the secondary and accent color?” Leave it to the experts at PPG Paints.

When you choose a color from any one of PPG Paints pallets, you are also given colors of the similar shade, accent colors, and trim colors to make your paint shopping experience a breeze.

Not only that, but PPG Paints allows you to upload a photo of your space and visualize any color! So you can be confident knowing you chose the right color.
